Lizzo Faces A Lawsuit for Sampling a Performance in Her Song

Aside from seeing her on social media, we haven't really heard music from Lizzo lately. However, they isn't stopping people from coming for her. Lizzo has been hit with a $750,000 lawsuit from a church elder. You're thinking, what happened? According to The Jasmine Brand, Lizzo sampled a funeral performance for her 2016 song Coconut Oil. That does sound a big morbid. Orlandus Dunning of Detroit, the church elder, filed the lawsuit in 2020 claiming he suffered anguish and outrage when the song was released. Dunning said that the beginning and end of the song were recordings of a hymn he sang for a mutual family member’s private funeral. He claims Lizzo recored that piece without his permission.
