For so many years, we've seen the certain images on grocery items that would be deemed quite offensive, but things haven't changed. Everyone is aware of the Aunt Jemima brand, when used to have a slave on the brand items like pancake mix and syrup. Over the years, yes, the black woman's image began to change, but it still came off offensive, knowing the name Aunt Jemima came from a minstrel show. According to NBC, Quaker Oats announced Wednesday, saying the company recognizes that "Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype," and will change the name and image. Quaker Oats is removing the image and name to make progress toward racial equality. Too bad it took about 130 years. But the plus is Quaker said the new packaging will begin to appear in the fall of 2020 with a new name for the foods to be announced at a later date. And the company will donate at least $5 million over the next five years "to create meaningful, ongoing support and engagement in the Black community."
