HBCU President Resigns After Being Arrested For Prostitution & Drug Scandal

  • Jackson State University president, William Bynum, Jr. resigned from his position on Monday (February 10) after being one of 17 who was arrested in connection with a prostitution ring. 
  • Bynum and others were the targets of a two-day sting by police who made contact with the offenders through dark web sites. Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman says Bynum responded to an online ad for prostitution services and was caught by undercover police at a hotel.
  • 57-year-old Bynum is charged with procuring services of a prostitute, false statement of identity, and simple possession of marijuana. Another Jackson State University employee, Shonda McCarthy, 47, was also arrested for procuring services of a prostitute and possession of marijuana while operating a motor vehicle.
  • Bynum had been president of Jackson State University since 2017. Thomas Hudson, Bynum’s assistant, and chief diversity officer will serve as president in the interim.
