FRANCE: Makes Abortion a Constitutional Right

Leaked Report Indicates Supreme Court Set To Overturn Roe v. Wade

Hot Takes: France has revised their Constitution over 20 times since it was adopted in 1958. The last time it was revised was in 2008. The U.S. Constitution has also been amended over 20 times; the last time was in 1992. The Vatican disagrees with the bill, but a public poll found that the bill had over 80% support from the general public. Take note in the way France is calling it what it is -- an abortion. They're not fluffing up the language by calling it "access to reproductive rights" because it doesn't have to be that complicated. It's an abortion. Photo: Getty Images North America

France just became very popular for women -- it's now the first country in the world to make abortion a constitutional right.

Parliament voted 780-72 to revise the country's 1958 constitution to allow all women to have "guaranteed freedom" to abort. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal celebrated the historic first by saying, “We are sending the message to all women: Your body belongs to you and no one has the right to control it in your stead."

The moment the vote passed in Versailles, France celebrated by lighting up the Eiffel Tower with the phrase "My Body My Choice." Senators who rallied behind the bill celebrated its passing. Mélanie Vogel, a Green Party senator, said: "I want to send a message to feminists outside of France. Everyone told me a year ago it was impossible.” She added: “Nothing is impossible when you mobilize society.”

The change was prompted by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade in 2022, which led to restricted access in many states. (The New York Times)
