MEEK MILL: New Legal Strategy

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • On Tuesday, Mill's attorney Joe Tacopina told Complex all legal avenues will be pursued.
  • Are they just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks like Suge Knight tried to do?
  • The fact that the arresting officer is known to be a dirty cop at least should lead to a re-examination of the arrest and testimony.
  • It's worth a try.
  • Judge Brinkley is unlikely to be sympathetic, from what we've seen so far.

Meek Mill's legal team is questioning the legitimacy of his original 2007 arrest after the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a report revealing that the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office put together a "secret list" of suspect cops last year.

The main officer spotlighted is Reginald Graham, who arrested Meek in 2007. Meek's legal team says Graham's testimony as the sole witness during the rapper's 2008 trial is not credible. A new petition cites former cop Jerold Gibson, who's provided a sworn affidavit stating that he was present during Meek's arrest. According to Gibson, Graham's testimony contradicts what actually occurred that day.

Gibson says Meek never pointed a gun at Graham or anyone else, and that he took his gun out of his waistband to discard it, so the officers did not yell at him to "drop the gun." He adds that Graham never took cover behind a parked van and Meek never tried to escape.

During Meek's 2008 trial, Graham testified to recovering two packets of alleged crack cocaine from a criminal informant who allegedly purchased them from Mill, but the officer never offered a property receipt or lab report for those packets, or even the packets themselves, as evidence. Meek's lawyers also say Graham frequently stole and kept money that was recovered during searches and arrests, beat people who were considered suspects, and even admitted that he beat Meek in 2007 or 2008.
