Beyonce Expresses Solidarity With Nigeria

  • Last week many Nigerians questioned why Beyonce had been silent on the #EndSARS protests calling for an end to police violence in Nigeria.
  • SARS, which stands for Special Anti-Robbery Squad, was put in place to deal with crimes involving robbery, car theft, kidnapping, and crimes involving firearms. Protests have broken out over the special unit’s use of blackmail, extortion, framing, and torture.
  • Upon the shooting and killing of an innocent protestor on Tuesday, Beyonce took to social media to call for change and to share how she has been helping support the people of Nigeria.
  • “I am heartbroken to see the senseless brutality taking place in Nigeria. There has to be an end to SARS. We have been working on partnerships with youth organizations to support the protesting for change. We are collaborating with coalitions to provide emergency healthcare, food, and shelter. To our Nigerian sisters and brothers, we stand with you.”Beyonce’s statement read.
