- Quarterback Drew Brees has placed himself in the midst of a controversial firestorm after throwing shade at players who take a knee during the national anthem.
- In an interview withYahoo! Finance, the New Orleans Saints star says while the United States has "a long way to go," he will "never" sympathize with players who openly display a lack of patriotism. "I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country," Brees says. "Is everything right with our country right now? No, it's not. We still have a long way to go. But I think what you do by standing there and showing respect to the flag with your hand over your heart, is it shows unity."
- Brees' comments have clearly upset a number of his fellow athletes, many of whom take issue with his defense of a country they see as being racially unjust. Among them is one of his teammates, Michael Thomas. The Saints receiver tweeted, "We don't care if you don't agree."
