Sheriff Defends Deputy Who Punched African-American Woman In Detroit

  • While much of the country has been focused on the George Floyd incident in Minneapolis, another potentially racial confrontation has sparked protests in Detroit after a sheriff's deputy was caught on video punching an African-American woman. But in this case, law enforcement officials are defending the deputy's action.
  • After reviewing bodycam footage of the Tuesday encounter, Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton says the deputy struck Sha’Teina Grady El because she'd just bitten him. "You might not be able to hear that, but he says, ‘You’re biting me,'" Clayton says. "You can see the fresh bite mark on his forearm." However, that doesn't necessarily mean the deputy -- who's currently under investigation for the incident -- will walk away from the scandal unscathed, Clayton adds. "We’re not deciding right or wrong in any of this," he says. "We’ll wait until those investigations are complete."
  • However, Grady El's attorney says his client, who was being arrested because she'd skipped a scheduled court hearing, was only reacting to being abused. "If he was bit, I promise she didn’t initiate anything," Bill Amadeo says. "She was fighting back while being brutalized."
