NYC Reaches $3.3 Million Settlement With Kalief Browder's Family

New York City officials on Thursday announced a $3.3 million settlement with the family of Kalief Browder, who died by suicide after spending nearly three years in Rikers Island, most of it in solitary confinement. On Thursday, the New York Daily News r reported that the city is currently finalizing a $3.3 million settlement with Browder’s family. “Kalief Browder’s story helped inspire numerous reforms to the justice system to prevent this tragedy from ever happening again,” the city’s law department said in a statement. “We hope that this settlement and our continuing reforms help bring some measure of closure to the Browder family.” Browder was  16 years old when he was accused of stealing a backpack and arrested, later charged with second-degree robbery. He was released in 2013 when the charges against him were dropped. Browder had just turned 22 when he hanged himself in 2015.
