Philly’s Power 99 is celebrating Black History Month by shouting out some of our favorite sons and daughters throughout the month of February with The Power List. Some of the biggest names in the world of music, entertainment, politics and the arts that hail from Philly or the surrounding Tri-State area.

FEBRUARY 23, 2021:

One Third of the iconic R&B Girls Group TLC…and most often thought of as being a native of Atlanta, GA…Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes was born and raised right here in Philly.She attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then moved to Atlanta at age 19 upon hearing about an open casting call for a new girl group by her then boyfriend.The group would eventually become TLC…featuring Lopes, Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, and Rosanda ‘Chili’ Thomas…managed by Perri ‘Pebbles’ Reid.The would go on to become the biggest selling girl group of all time selling over 50 million albums worldwide.Lopes died tragically in Honduras in 2002 in a car accident, andher story is chronicled in the VH-1 Documentary, ‘The Last Days of Left Eye’.Her funeral was attended by over 5K mourners in the city of Atlanta.
