SMH: Man Sentenced to 32 Years for Starving Infant to Death

How could you do this to a child that was only alive for six weeks?

Unbelievable...

A Colorado man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for the death of his six-week-old son, who was found so malnourished his skin hung loosely from his bones.John Ostrander, 22, pleaded guilty in May to third-degree felony child abuse resulting in the February 2017 death of his son Zayden.  Ostrander and Donica Mirabal, Zayden's mother, were both initially charged with murder. Per his plea agreement, Ostrander faced four to 32 years in prison. On Monday District Judge Marla Prudek decided to give Ostrander the maximum sentence available for the death of the infant. Mirabal's case is still pending.Paramedics found Zayden dead on the floor at the Solar Vista Apartments in Colorado Springs last year. One emergency responder said the severely underweight child looked like 'something out of an Auschwitz movie' and was 'skin and bones', according to KRDO.A coroner found that Zayden had died from 'prolonged, intentional neglect and lack of care on the part of the caretaker(s)'.Mirabal claimed that Zayden had been getting 'sicker and sicker' since she left the hospital. She told police she never bonded with her baby and had no attachment to him.It was also discovered that Mirabal smoked marijuana throughout her pregnancy and only saw a doctor three times. Zayden tested positive for THC when he was born.  Mirabal said the problems began on February 26, 2017, when Zayden began to feel 'clammy and cold' and did not have any bowel movements.By the next day he had stopped eating and could barely stay awake. When Zayden opened his mouth to cry, no sound would come out. On February 28, Mirabal said her son was pale and went limp when she held him. She went to sleep and found him dead at 5.30pm.Mirabal told police that she never took Zayden to the hospital in the days before his death because she did not have a car. When investigators asked Ostrander if he had ever taken his son to the hospital after he was born, he replied 'of course not'.Ostrander also told police that it was Mirabal's job to take care of Zayden because he was the 'bread winner' and had never fed his son or changed his diaper. -(Daily Mail)
