A teen mother suffocated her own baby, then carried his body in a shopping bag and attempted to steal from Victoria's Secret.
A woman who suffocated her newborn baby and carried his tiny body in a shopping bag to Victoria's Secret to shoplift was sentenced to 16 years in prison Thursday.
Tiona Rodriguez, 21, previously admitted to snuffling the life out of her 8-pound boy in the bathroom at her pal's Queens apartment before bringing the corpse with her to the lingerie store in Herald Square on Oct. 16, 2013.She was charged with murder but struck a deal in Manhattan Supreme Court that got her the reduced sentence for pleading guilty to manslaughter. She will be monitored for five years after her release.
The sentencing "we hope brings justice to the baby boy who never got to life his life," Assistant District Attorney Chloe Kendall said in court Thursday.
Rodriguez, who was 17 at the time of the killing, wore tan jail garb and white plastic rosary beads as she went before the judge. She shook her head and declined to speak when offered the chance.
"I don't think anything more needs to be said on the record," Justice Thomas Farber said. "It's a horribly sad and tragic case."
Rodriguez had a 2-year-old son at the time of the incident. Prosecutors said she also delivered a baby that immediately died in a bathtub in 2012 and that the cause of death was unknown. -(Shayna Jacobs, NY Daily News)
