SMH: Man Sucker Punched By Teens For Cell Phone Dies From Injuries
Some of these kids don't have any damn sense.
An elderly man who took care of his blind wife has died after being punched by two teenagers trying to steal his cell phone.
A Queens man sucker-punched during a cell phone robbery has died of his injuries — and detectives are weighing homicide charges against two teens charged in the heartless attack, police sources said Tuesday.
Mohammad Alam, 72, died at St. John’s Hospital Jan. 31, police said. The Bangladeshi immigrant, who spent the last 15 years caring for his blind wife, had been on life support since the Sept. 28 in front of MIM Wireless on Hillside Ave. near 167th St. in Jamaica Hills.
A cousin told The Daily News that Alam was devoted to the care of his wife, a former surgeon in their home country.
“He’s been taking care of her” ever since she went blind after eye surgery, Alam’s cousin Faisel Hassan told the Daily News last October, describing the devoted husband as “a very good person.”
According to police, Alam was talking on his phone when a teen ran past and snatched the cell from Alam’s hand.
Chasing after the thief, Alam was punched across the face by another youth standing nearby, hurling Alam head-first onto the sidewalk, police said.
Horrified witnesses tried to grab the youth, but he escaped and fled. The attack, however, was caught on video.
Shyquan Kimble and Jaleel Steele, both 16 and from Queens, were arrested Oct. 3 and charged with robbery and assault, and were ordered held without bail at Rikers Island.
Criminal charges will most likely be upgraded at their next court date March 1, police sources told the Daily News. -(Thomas Tracy, NY Daily News)
