16 Year Old Shot, Killed By Sheriff's Deputy Inside Courtroom
Damn, this had to have been a crazy scene.
A 16 year old who had a court date ended up dead after getting into a heated confrontation with members of his family.
Joseph Haynes was fatally struck in the abdomen on Wednesday when he appeared at a domestic relations courtroom in Columbus for a menacing with a firearm charge.
A fight broke out between Haynes, some of his family members, and a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy at the end of the hearing, according to investigator Rick Minerd.
The deputy fired the fatal shot when he was knocked to the ground, and Haynes died at a nearby hospital about 30 minutes later.
It remains unclear whether the gun was intentionally discharged.
The deputy, who has not been identified, was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Minerd said.
Minerd, who described the courthouse as “very busy” and “very emotional,” said the sheriff’s office extends its condolences to Haynes’ family and wishes the injured deputy a quick recovery.
