What Did He Commit, A Super Murder? Judge Sets Man's Bail At $4 Billion
For all that, this judge should just denied that man bail.
A newly elected judge in Texas decided to make a statement and raise some eyebrows by setting the record for the highest bail amount ever set at $4 billion.
Claudia Brown issued the stiff bail last week for Antonio Willis, who is charged with killing another man at a home in Killeen on Dec. 22. It is believed to be the highest bond ever set in the U.S.
The bail was so high, it could not be inputed into the Bell County Jail's booking software, according to the Temple Daily Telegram. The figure of $1,000,000,999 was entered for Willis.
"This justice of the peace is abusing the bail process in an attempt to make a name for herself, as opposed to setting a reasonable and affordable bond as required by law," White told the newspaper. "It makes a mockery of the process and a fool of her."
Jeff Parker, another lawyer, said the $4 billion bond could be challenged as unconstitutional. The Eighth Amendment protects against cruel and unusual punishment and specifically refers to protections against excessive bail or fines. -(NY Daily News)
