Kanye West's "Power" Sparks Lawsuit Over Unpaid Royalties

Kanye West has definitely had some hits. In 2010, he released his song "Power" but now things are coming back to bite him in the ass. Variety reports Universal Music Group (UMG) has been struck with a lawsuit over the song. UMG allegedly has not been paying the appropriate amount of royalties to the song’s original owner. The sample Ye uses in the song comes from a rock band, King Crimson and their song “21st Century Schizoid Man," but Declan Colgan Music Ltd (DCM), which own the mechanical rights (the original version of the track) to “21st Century Schizoid Man,” claim that UMG has been underpaying on streaming royalties arising from “Power.” Needless to say, they want their money and have issued a lawsuit. Ye originally sampled the track without a license before uploading it back in 2010. But DCM contacted UMG and Ye and they signed an agreement with DCM two months later legally allowing Ye to sample the King Crimson track in return for a 5.33% royalty on each copy of “Power” that was sold or “otherwise exploited.” Well DCM isn't happy because they are trying to get their money, saying, UMG “has failed, and continues to fail, to comply with its royalty accounting obligations in respect of one mode of exploitation, namely the making available of the Power [r]ecording to consumers through so-called ‘streaming’ services.”
