Veteran NBA Ref Tony Brown Diagnosed with Cancer

  • Veteran NBA referee Tony Brown will miss the rest of the regular season and the playoffs as he battles pancreatic cancer, the league announced Monday.
  • Brown, who's been with the NBA for 19 years, was diagnosed with the potentially-fatal illness last month, says Monty McCutchen, the league's senior vice president of referee development and training. "Tony is a beloved member of the NBA family, and in particular, our officiating family,” McCutchen says. "In addition to exemplifying what it means to be a world class referee on the court, Tony also touches so many lives off the court."
  • Over the course of his career, Brown has officiated 1,109 regular-season games and 35 playoff games, according to NBA officials.
