Philadelphia City Council Approved Permanent Curfew for Teens

Over the summer, teens had a curfew to keep them out of trouble in Philly. If kids were under 18, they had to be in the house by 10 p.m. instead of midnight. According to The Inquirer, the he city framed it as a way to keep children safe during the gun violence crisis. That legislation, championed by Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson, expired at the end of September. But now, the Philadelphia City Council voted to make the curfew permanent. Considering the amount of violence that has plagued the city in recent months, that also involved shootings of young people, if it becomes law, kids 17 and under will have to be home by 10 p.m. curfew and kids 13 and younger have to be home by 9:30 p.m. if they are not accompanied by an adult. The curfew ends at 6 a.m. Even though the city council approved it, the legislation is headed to Mayor Jim Kenney’s desk for final approval before becoming law but we're not sure if he supports the curfew and will sign off. Some experts who study curfews say they have little to no impact on juvenile crime. What do you think?
