- Meisha Ross Porter has become the first Black woman in history to head New York City's public school system, officials have announced.
- Porter's appointment comes in the wake of New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza's abrupt departure, which he announced in a Friday press conference. He went on to endorse Porter, saying, "She eats, drinks, sleeps and thinks at all times about New York and the children of New York."
- Carranza says he resigned to allow himself time to grieve for 11 family members and friends who have lost their lives to COVID-19.
