Squirrels in Queens are more hood than I thought. Multiple New Yorkers have reported in Rego Park that squirrels have been attacking pedestrians without being provoked! According to Foxnews.com, " [T]heir neighborhood has experienced around 20 unprovoked squirrel attacks since Thanksgiving."
Citizens have taken to social media and share their experiences: "The squirrel didn’t care, it just wanted something -- it wanted blood," she said. "For a few days afterwards I would come out with a shovel, just in case, looking around". (Micheline Frederick, NY)
The attacks have become more frequent and peaked an investigation with the NYC Health Department. According to FOX5NY.com " We are actively working with residents to get more information about the bite events and coordinating with the trapper," a department spokesperson told FOX 5 NY. "Squirrels and many other small rodents are rarely found to be infected with rabies. If New Yorkers believe they have observed an animal infected with rabies, they should report it to 311. Any resident who has been bitten should contact their doctor and report it to the Department's Animal Bite Unit."
The interesting part is that these trappers cost $1,000! Good luck to the people in Queens, try to stay away from Rego Park for a little.
